There's something I need to tell you

  • Client:

The Lantern Project

  • Brief:

Produce a video tailored to engage the deaf viewer & that that informs them of the Lantern Project's existence & of the support available through the charity.

More Info

The Lantern Project based in New Brighton on the Wirral has helped to provide support for the survivors of sexual abuse since 2003. Through their website, publications and person to person counselling the charity has supported thousands of survivors.

In the 1960s and 70s, one of the places where severe sexual abuse is known to have taken place, was in residential care homes. This has led to a high percentage of people from the deaf community being victims of childhood abuse.

Relating experiences of abuse is difficult enough for all survivors, but made even harder for those with communication challenges.

The Lantern Project wanted to address the deaf community directly and commissioned a video specifically tailored to deaf viewers.

Solution

Funded by the Big Lottery, Chat Noir Productions worked on the script with Graham Wilmer, founder of the Lantern Project, and the Merseyside Society for Deaf People, who would supply deaf actors and a BSL interpreter.

The video was produced by the Lantern Project’s Rory Wilmer, who, with a background in media production, coordinated the logistics of locations, studio space and cast.

The video was shot over four days, at locations on the Wirral and in Liverpool, using a single HD camera and field lighting kit. As well as using subtitles, a BLS interpreter was shot against greenscreen, and overlaid on the final video.

An original musical track was composed-to-picture.

The final video was provided on DVD for public screenings, as well as a HD version for YouTube, and the Lantern Project’s website.
